Our Vision and Mission

The guiding principle for the Indigenous Navigator is to support Indigenous Peoples to advocate for recognition and respect of their rights as Indigenous Peoples.

The Indigenous Navigator aims at providing Indigenous communities with tools that make it possible for them to document and monitor their situation through data and in a way that is easily communicable to duty bearers and development actors. The Indigenous Navigator provides for a framework for this that builds on the rights enshrined in the UNDRIP and ILO Convention 169. Further, the framework links to critical components of the SDGs and WCIP outcome document. It includes tools to measure progress on the implementation of these instruments and identifies major implementation gaps at the local level. The Indigenous Navigator seeks to ensure that the tools and the information generated within the Indigenous Navigator can be accessed and used to support, further empower and strengthen Indigenous organisations and other advocacy organisations who are supporting Indigenous Peoples.

The Indigenous Navigator is coordinated by a consortium, currently consisting of Asia Indigenous Peoples' Pact (AIPP), Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR), Forest Peoples' Programme (FPP), the International Work Group for Indigenous Affairs (IWGIA), and the Tebtebba Foundation. Together this consortium has cooperated to implement three projects with support from the European Union.

The Indigenous Navigator is led by a Steering Committee consisting of one representative from each of the 6 consortium partners. The Steering Committee guides the consortium and makes decisions on the strategic direction for the Indigenous Navigator, sets priorities for fundraising and monitoring, and oversees project implementation.

Our vision

To provide accessible data, by and with Indigenous Peoples, that will support self-determined development and grounded advocacy towards the full and effective implementation of Indigenous Peoples' rights and self-determined development.

Our mission

We support and empower Indigenous organisations in generating and using data in their efforts to hold duty bearers accountable for their human rights violations, obligations and sustainable development commitments. Furthermore, we support the formation of alliances with key stakeholders, and the provision of quality data to relevant actors, including the United Nations, governments, national statistics agencies, media, and civil society.
